How to Seal Natural Stone Yourself
Why Sealing is Important
Sealing your granite, marble, travertine, or quartzite surfaces is essential to protect them from stains, moisture, and damage. The good news? You can do it yourself with the right tools and techniques. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Sealing is Important
Natural stone is porous, meaning it can absorb liquids and stain easily. Sealing creates a protective barrier that:
- Prevents staining from spills like wine, coffee, and oils
- Reduces water absorption and etching
- Enhances the stone’s natural beauty
- Extends the life of your benchtops, floors, and vanities
What You’ll Need
Before you start, gather these essentials:
- Stone Cleaner: pH-neutral cleaner for natural stone
- Penetrating Sealer: Choose a high-quality sealer suitable for your stone type
- Microfiber Cloths or Applicator Pads
- Gloves & Ventilation: Safety first!
- Optional: Masking tape for edges
Step-by-Step Guide to Sealing Stone
- Clean the Surface: Remove dirt, grease, and old sealant. Let it dry completely.
- Apply the Sealer: Use a clean cloth . Spread evenly across the surface.
- Let It Absorb: Allow the sealer to penetrate for 10–15 minutes.
- Wipe Off Excess: Wipe the surface with a dry cloth to avoid streaks.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using acidic cleaners before sealing
- Applying too much sealer (can cause hazy finish)
- Not allowing enough drying time
- Forgetting to reseal regularly
How Often Should You Seal?
- Granite: Every 2–3 years
- Marble & Travertine: Every 6 months to 1 year
- Quartzite: Every 1 -2 years
Tip: Do a water test—if water doesn’t bead on the surface, it’s time to reseal. - This is all dependent on how much traffic the surface receives.
