Cleaning Natural Stone

Natural stone is timeless, elegant, and durable—but only if you care for it properly. As someone who works with marble, granite, travertine, and quartzite every day, I’ve seen the beauty these stones bring to homes and the heartbreak when they’re damaged by the wrong cleaning methods. In this guide, I’ll share practical, expert-backed tips to keep your stone surfaces looking flawless for years.

Why Cleaning Natural Stone Is Different

Unlike ceramic tiles or engineered surfaces, natural stone is porous and chemically sensitive. Marble and travertine, for example, are calcareous stones, which means they react to acids. Granite and quartzite are more resilient but still require gentle care. This is why common household cleaners—like vinegar or bleach—can cause permanent damage.

Myth to bust: “Vinegar is a natural cleaner, so it’s safe for stone.”

Truth: Vinegar is acidic and will etch marble and travertine, leaving dull spots that require professional refinishing.

My Go-To Cleaning Method

For everyday cleaning, keep it simple: Warm water + pH-neutral soap

  1. Mix a small amount of pH-neutral dish soap (Palmolive Original will do). into warm water.
  2. Dunk a soft microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out until it's just damp.
  3. Gently wipe the marble surface with the damp cloth.
  4. Rinse the cloth well and wipe the surface with clean water to remove any remaining soap.
  5. Dry the surface with a soft towel to prevent watermarks.

For tougher jobs, we stock specialized stone cleaners at Granite Marble Works that are safe for all natural stone types.

    Common Mistakes That Cause Damage

We’ve seen it all—creative scratching from abrasive products and severe etching from cleaners that were too acidic or too basic.
These mistakes often lead to costly refinishing or even replacement.
The takeaway? Always check the label and avoid harsh chemicals.

    Stain Removal & Deep Cleaning

Oil-based stains: Apply a baking soda poultice (baking soda + water), cover with plastic wrap, and leave for 24–48 hours.

Organic stains (coffee, wine): Use Proceed with caution: hydrogen peroxide or an enzyme cleaner. stick to low concentrations (around 3% or lower), apply sparingly, and rinse thoroughly with water. Avoid prolonged contact.

Soap scum: Use a non-acidic soap scum remover and rinse well. If stains persist, call a professional—DIY fixes can make things worse if done incorrectly.

Sealing Stone: The Step Most People Forget

Natural stone isn’t just cleaned—it needs to be sealed regularly. Sealing creates a protective barrier that helps prevent stains and etching.
How often? Every 6 months to a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface. This depends on the traffic on the surface. Why it matters: Without sealing, stone absorbs liquids, making stains harder to remove and increasing the risk of damage.
At Granite Marble Works, we recommend high-quality penetrating sealers for maximum protection. We carry a range of HMK Products which are Trusted for Marble Care

    Why HMK?
✅ Reliability: HMK has been a trusted name in stone care for decades, delivering consistent results for natural stone surfaces.
✅ Food Safety: Many HMK products are formulated to meet food-safe standards, making them ideal for kitchen benchtops and dining areas.
✅ Trustworthiness: Backed by German engineering and rigorous quality control, HMK products are trusted by professionals worldwide for preserving the beauty and integrity of marble, granite, and other natural stones.

    Pro Tips & Opinions

    • Biggest myth: “Bleach kills germs, so it’s safe for stone.” Wrong—bleach can discolour and weaken stone.
    • Eco-friendly cleaners: Great for the planet, but not all are safe for stone. Always check for pH neutrality.
    • Quick hack: Use coasters and trivets—prevention is easier than repair.

    Conclusion

Natural stone is an investment worth protecting.

With the right care—warm water, pH-neutral soap, regular sealing, and gentle maintenance—you’ll enjoy its beauty for decades.

If you need specialized cleaners, sealers, or professional advice, Granite Marble Works is here to help.

    PALOMA LIGHT MARBLE...

Like a riverbed frozen in time, or the cobblestones of an old Italian street, it carries a sense of history & permanence.
